The pros and cons of the different types of ACs.
Choose a good AC that can fill your needs can be difficult if you don’t know the basics, things like compressors, condensers, and evaporators are not common things to know so, let’s talk a little about the basics.
First, there are various types of ACs, two of the most commons are the splits ACs and the windows ACs. Both have difference, advantage, and problems. The other one is the central AC, but it can be less cheap and the most complicated of all, so for now, let’s talk about the other two.
WHICH ONE IS BETTER?
Okay, first thing first. This depends on your house or space where you want to install the AC. On the surface, people usually thinks that a split AC needs less space, but they are wrong, a split system is divided into two units, with an outdoor unit, and with an indoor unit. Technically a windows AC takes less space is all compact in a cubic system, but most people don’t have the space to put one, remember, a window AC need a hole in your wall to be installed, and that can be a problem. Almost the same with a Split system with an outdoor unit, that unit needs to be a good place outside your house, with good ventilation or the system will struggle.
The biggest advantage here is that the outdoor unit can be placed everywhere you want, while the windows AC is restricted to be installed in a big opening on your wall with good ventilation.
But the thing is if you live on rent, or if you move on often, the window AC is much more effective as is easier to install and uninstall. And the maintenance of the window AC is also less complicated than the split, which needs specialized maintenance.
LET’S TALK ABOUT COOLING
Okay, first of all, we can say that both generate almost the same electricity consumption rate. Since splits work with a compressor that is installed outside in some cases, well, that put the compressor into less work because, as we recommend, it is installed in a ventilated place. We know that split can be complicated but good brands can help you with that if they have good after sale services.
Windows works harder and their life span is significantly shorter. The real problem here is that windows AC are one big unit, so their capacity depends on their size. The bigger they are the better that they can be cooling. That generate some problems, you need to remember that the window AC needs a hole in your wall, so it really depends on your space, it can be more powerful than the simple split but you need the space.
ARE SPLIT BETTER?
Well, yes, but let me explain myself here. First of all, windows are, indeed, cheaper, but you sacrifice space and light on your room. In fact, no matter how you installed it, windows AC are dangerous. It is a hole in your home, making a big hole in your security. Split AC use ducts if their system is outdoor that is, small holes on your home, yes, but nothing too big for someone to get in.
In terms of pure data and efficiency, as stated before, it can be both ways here. That’s why the energy star exists, this is the way companies rate the ACs. So if you have a windows AC with a 5 stars rating, well, that’s amazing but it just doesn’t come close to the power that a Split system with the same rating has, with less noise too, windows ACs are considerable noisier than their peers.
This energy rating represents the amount of cooling per watt. What we are saying here is basically that the split system is always cooling more efficiently per watt. It is simple why, you can put them everywhere and their reach is bigger, making a far superior experience.
THE COST OF COMFORT
Yes! Split is amazing, but to have that amazing system, you need to spend good money. Not only the systems are expensive, but the installation is more complex, making that process expensive. If you want to reinstall the system, that too is complex because this operates with ducts, making the reinstallation harder. They are tricky to transport and difficult to refill their gas.
Windows AC, on the contrary, are cheap. As a single unit it is really easy to install, the only real problem is the hole on the wall, but with good customer service, this can be installed by everyone.
The big difference here is that this system is for the whole house. While is really expensive to install and far more complicated than just putting a pair of room ACs, but it deserves its price, they are more energy efficiently and all around more powerful than their peers. It is even pleasing for the eyes ass it unit is from view, most of the times over the roof of your house.
But this is the thing, this AC is the most popular… for people who own a house, if you live on rent or if you move a lot this system it just isn’t for you. First of all, not that many landlords with giving the permits you need to modify the house this much. Second, this cannot be moved easily, it’s hard work and only their installation is severely expensive, so reinstallation is almost out of the picture here.
With this information…
SPLIT ARE THE ANSWER
Central AC is powerful, but they aren’t cheap and they aren’t easy to maintain. The average cost of the centre can be up to 5000$, that is crazy, to contrast, the average for windows is just 300$, you can really install 3 or 4 windows AC and still spend less. But as we know windows have a shorter life span, are less powerful and can affect your security.
So splits… The average cost is up to 1000$, they can do more with less than the windows, and is cheaper and easier to maintain than the central. The great thing about these is that, even if it is expensive, it can be reinstalled elsewhere. You can even install it without making big changes to your home. Even if you are on the move often, this system can serve you well. Centrals are really out of the question on this matter.
So now you know, I can recommend you splits, yes, but is up to you. It depends on your home, on how much do you want to spend and what you need really is. All of the ACs can do the job, you just only need to see their rating to know how good they are.
